With Civil War, Danish photographer Mads Holm succeeds in rendering the concrete abstract; a work where the claim to truth inherent to the photographic medium itself – or the myth hereof – is challenged. Since its inception, the camera has been said to be a bearer of objectivity – a way of depicting ‘what actually is’. So apparently it is in this book where we move through people, places, and objects all definitely from ‘out there’ in reality. But what Holm’s photographs give us is the sense that this reality is itself possessed by some mystical supplement of the unreal.  Hence also the title Civil War: the visualisation of an artistic medium at odds with its own conditions of (im)possibility.
